Session 1:  Getting Organised

What are the basics you need to know?

The umpire needs to: 

  • Provide a safe & enjoyable game for all
  • Be prepared
  • Be fair & consistent – setting a good tone
  • Know where to position themselves for viewing the play
  • Work with other officials as a team – communicate well with all parties
  • Understand the game & current rules & interpretations


What does an umpire need to bring to the game?

1.  A pea-less loud whistle

 

2.  Umpiring cards



3. Stopwatch/digital watch


4.  Small notepad & pen

5.  A coin to toss for picking starting ends (or flats/rounds of the captain's hockey stick


6.  Appropriate shoes and shirt in a contrasting colour to the teams that are playing


What are the umpire's  duties before the game starts?

  •   Arrive at your venue at least 15mins before the game
  •   Pre match discussion with other umpire – umpiring strategy (session 2)
  •   Warm up & stretch
  •   Check the field for dangers or obstacles – ENSURE A SAFE PLAYING ENVIRONMENT
  •   Check the goal net position
  •   Meet the Captains for the coin toss & check their identifier
  •   Choose ends: Areas of control


Professional Presentation – how does it help?


How does an umpire look professional?  Consider the list below.

  •   Body language?
  •   Uniform?
  •   How you signal?
  •   How you blow the whistle?
  •   How to deliver cards for misconduct?


For umpiring in Brisbane Hockey, the uniform is:

  • Yellow shirt: Just Hockey $35
  • Black skirt/shorts
  • Black socks & Joggers
  • Black cap


Which areas of the field is the umpire in control of? 


How much does an umpire get paid?  $$$$$

In 2024...

  • From our Bulimba club: U11 to Seniors $30per game;  
  • U7/9: $20per game
  • From BWHA/BHA:  Hockey Ed badge + $10 per game
  • Tech Official Accreditation:  $10-$20 per game
